VILAGE OF PANORMOS
Panormo is one of the most beautiful fishing villages of Crete, with population of around 400 people. It is located in the center of the island, 22km east of Rethymno and 55km west of Heraklion. It is an ideal place to relax, offering 2 sandy beaches, lots of taverns with local delicacies and quiet little streets, giving you the chance to enjoy strolling around and taking in the beauty of a traditional Cretan village.
If you are in the mood of exploring a little more, it is well worth visiting the ruins of Agia Sophia, a basilica built in the early Christian times, around the 5th century, proving that the area was a center of Christian worship at the time.
At the lighthouse on the cape of Hondrocavos you can experience a magical sunset, while enjoying the nature and tranquility at just 800 meters from the village center.
You can also visit “Charoupomylos” (carob mill), which has been characterized as an industrial monument by the Greek Ministry of Culture. It was built around 1930 and was used for the processing of carob seeds, found in abundance in the area. Today cultural events are taking place here regularly, especially during the summer.
